HELPING METALWORKERS EVERY DAY
Shayne Worgan
Welder
If you want something done fast and well, sometimes the best way to achieve it, is by doing it yourself. Shayne learned that at a young age, watching his dad fix and repair all kinds of items around the house. Shayne’s first job was to hold the flashlight while his father did the fixing.
Read Shayne's Story
After giving graphic design a try in school, Shayne went back to his roots. He realized that the countless hours spent helping his dad, as well the experience gained by building and repairing things on his own were not in vain since they were highly requested and profitable in the world of large-scale manufacturing. So, he decided to give welding a try.
Eight years later, Shayne now works for one of North America’s largest manufacturers of freight car axles and a leading train repair shop, supplying the transit and ground passenger transportation industry. “At the shop, we work on so many different projects. I can be welding, gauging, grinding, and drilling within the same day. Cars are continuously coming in. I can’t afford to waste time; I’ve got to stay on schedule”.
His passion for metalworking, as well as his access to the proper tools and abrasives helps Shayne get the job done fast. So fast, that when he asked his boss what he could do to improve and suggested he could try to work a little faster, his boss chuckled and said: “No, I really don’t think your speed is an issue”.
Performing a wide variety of repairs on rail cars has its challenges. “Maintenance and repairs on trains are physically demanding jobs. Flap discs that increase my comfort level, help take a load off my shoulders.” But it also has its rewards: “Seeing these huge units enter the shop all crooked and worn down and leave the shop looking as good as new is so satisfying!”.
Shayne is definitely on the fast track to success.
