Worker Profile Rob Reid

Ironworker and General Foreman, Rob Reid, talks about his challenges and successes while working on the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge connecting two countries: The Gordie Howe Bridge.

The job of an ironworker is both physically demanding and often dangerous. “You need a little more backbone than most to do the crazy job that we do."

Meet Rob Reid, a proud ironworker for over 20 years.

Rob has always been drawn to the metalworking industry. At the age of 17, he was already working as a steel fabricator building plywood mills. However, spending the scorching summer months in the shop wasn’t for him. His solution: get out on the field and start erecting.

Throughout the years, Rob contributed to the construction of several infrastructure mega projects. In fact, one of the things he likes the most about his job is knowing that the fruit of his labor will most likely pass the test of time and remain standing for many more generations. “Everything I built is still standing. It’s an accomplishment, right?”

Today, Rob is working on the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge connecting two countries: The Gordie Howe Bridge. It will be over 120 ft wide and over 780 ft high. Once completed, the bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan will be among the top five longest bridges in North America.

We asked Rob about the challenges of working at great heights and having cranes and pieces above his head. “You can’t think about the danger. It becomes an everyday thing!” Rob says. “Safe tools allow me to do a better job, so I can focus on the task at hand. We already face a lot of hazards on-site, so safety is key.”

If you need help with something on the site, Rob is your go-to guy. He’s always there to try to make everyone’s job easier by sharing his tricks of the trade and tips for working more efficiently. And he does so with the best of attitudes: “I believe I’m a pretty easygoing guy. I’m just trying to make everybody’s day go by easier. There is no sense in bringing the grouchy to the work, so I’m always smiling and laughing”. When asked what sets him apart from his coworkers, without hesitation, he said: “experience”.

“I’m just proud to be an ironworker.”

Rob has no intention of stopping or retiring anytime soon. “I don’t see an end yet, I just keep going”. Just like every structure, he works on, Rob is built to last.
